RESUMO

Textile-based sweat sensors display great potential to enhance wearable comfort and health monitoring; however, their widespread application is severely hindered by the intricate manufacturing process and electrochemical characteristics. To address this challenge, we combined both impregnation coating technology and conjugated electrospinning technology to develop an electro-assisted impregnation core-spinning technology (EAICST), which enables us to simply construct a sheath-core electrochemical sensing yarn (TPFV/CPP yarn) via coating PEDOT:PSS-coated carbon fibers (CPP) with polyurethane (TPU)/polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/poloxamer (F127)/valinomycin as shell. The TPFV/CPP yarn was sewn into the fabric and integrated with a sensor to achieve a detachable feature and efficiently monitor K+ levels in sweat. By introducing EAICST, a speed of 10 m/h can be realized in the continuous preparation of the TPFV/CPP yarn, while the interconnected pores in the yarn sheath enable it to quickly capture and diffuse sweat. Besides, the sensor exhibited excellent sensitivity (54.26 mV/decade), fast response (1.7 s), anti-interference, and long-term stability (5000 s or more). Especially, it also possesses favorable washability and wear resistance properties. Taken together, this study provides a crucial technical foundation for the development of advanced wearable devices designed for sweat analysis.

RESUMO

Recovery of carbon fibres and resin from wind turbine blade waste (WTB) composed of carbon fibres (CF)-reinforced unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) has been environmentally challenging due to its complex structure that is not biodegradable and that is rich in highly toxic styrene (main component of UPR). Within this framework, this paper aims to liberate CF and UPR from WTB using a pyrolysis process. The treatment was performed on commercial WTB (CF/UPR) up to 600 °C using a 250 g reactor. The UPR fraction was decomposed into liquid and gaseous phases, while CF remained as a residue. The composition of gaseous phase was monitored during the entire treatment using a digital gas analyser, while gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to characterize the collected liquid phase. CF fraction was collected and exposed to additional oxidation process after treatment at 450 °C for purification propose, then it was analysed using FTIR and SEM-EDX. Finally, the life cycle assessment (LCA) of the CF/UPR pyrolysis was studied using SimaPro software and the results were compared with landfill disposal practices. The pyrolysis results manifested that 500 °C was sufficient for UPR decomposition into styrene-rich oil and gaseous products with yields of 15.23 wt% and 6.83 wt%, respectively, accompanied by 77.93 wt% solid residue including CF. The LCA results showed that pyrolysis with oxidation process has high environmental potential in WTB recycling with significant reduction in several impact categories compared to landfill. However, the pyrolysis scenario revealed several additional environmental burdens related to ecosystems, acidification, Ozone formation, and fine particulate matter formation that must be overcome before upscaling.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION/PURPOSE: Previous results about shoe longitudinal bending stiffness (LBS) and running economy (RE) show high variability. This study aimed to assess the effects of shoes with increased LBS on RE and performance in trained and national runners. METHODS: Twenty-eight male runners were divided into two groups according to their 10-km performance times (trained, 38-45 min and national runners, <34 min). Subjects ran 2 × 3 min (at 9 and 13 km·h -1 for trained, and 13 and 17 km·h -1 for national runners) with an experimental shoe with carbon fiber plate to increase the LBS (Increased LBS) and a control shoe (without carbon fiber plate). We measured energy cost of running (W·kg -1 ) and spatiotemporal parameters in visit one and participants performed a 3000 m time trial (TT) in two successive visits. RESULTS: Increased LBS improved RE in the trained group at slow (11.41 ± 0.93 W·kg -1 vs 11.86 ± 0.93 W·kg -1 ) and fast velocity (15.89 ± 1.24 W·kg -1 vs 16.39 ± 1.24 W·kg -1 ) and only at the fast velocity in the national group (20.35 ± 1.45 W·kg -1 vs 20.78 ± 1.18 W·kg -1 ). The improvements in RE were accompanied by different changes in biomechanical variables between groups. There were a similar improvement in the 3000 m TT test in Increased LBS for trained (639 ± 59 vs 644 ± 61 s in control shoes) and national runners (569 ± 21 vs 574 ± 21 s in control shoes) with more constant pace in increased LBS compared with control shoes in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: Increasing shoe LBS improved RE at slow and fast velocities in trained runners and only at fast velocity in national runners. However, the 3000 m TT test improved similarly in both levels of runners with increased LBS. The improvements in RE are accompanied by small modifications in running kinematics that could explain the difference between the different levels of runners.

RESUMO

This study utilizes artificial intelligence and statistical modelling to optimize the operating parameters of a carbon-based electro-Fenton process for purifying model dye (RB19)-contaminated wastewater. Multilevel experimental Box-Behnken and uniform deisgns (BBD, UD) with four variables were analysed using polynomial regression analysis (PRA) and artificial neural networks (ANN), while the process optimisation was done using desirability function. For the given testing range but different design matrices and runs, both designs predicted a maximum RB19 removal (RB19-RR) of 90 ± 2.1% at lowest energy consumption (EC) of 0.44 ± 2.5 Wh, when voltage, Na2SO4, FeSO4, and time were maintained as follows: 4-5.3 V, 7-11 mM, 0.4-0.6 mM, and 35-40 min, respectively. All the design-model combinations portrayed the similar senitivity analyses, revealing that RB19 degradation and EC are primarily influenced by electrolysis time and voltage. The performance assessment demonstrated that all the design-model combinations also excellently predicted for unseen conditions as the maximum root mean squared error (RMSE) value for RB19-RR was 4.07, while it was 0.072 for EC, however, BBD-ANN performance proved to be slightly better than others. Having ∼57% less experimentation, UD based models managed to accurately predict the results for unseen conditions as the statistical errors were quite insignificant, even in some cases, RMSE found to be less for UD compared to BBD, elucidating the potential of uniform design as an alternative of conventional factorial designs. Nevertheless, the prediction accuracy is also dependent on modelling approach, as in some cases ANN failed to predict the response precisely specially when dealing with small data. Furthermore, techno-economic evaluation results spell out the efficacy of carbon felt based enhanced electro-Fenton process as promising environmental remediation technology and highlight its practical implication from view of operational cost.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Lower-limb loss is an ongoing cause of disability throughout the world. Despite advancements in prosthetic technologies, there are numerous underserved populations in need of effective low-cost prosthetic foot options. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the biomechanical performance of several low-cost prosthetic feet, using a combination of instrumented gait analysis and mechanical stiffness testing. STUDY DESIGN: Randomized crossover with additional case study. METHODS: We compared the solid-ankle-cushioned-heel (SACH), Jaipur, and Niagara feet with carbon fiber feet. Mechanical stiffness was evaluated using a cantilever-style bending test at 2 angles that was designed to mimic late stance gait loading. Eight below-knee amputees participated in the gait analysis, which focused on foot and ankle motion and energetics. RESULTS: Metric analysis showed significant differences among feet in ankle motion and power as well as distal-to-shank power, with SACH showing reduced ankle motion and positive work compared with the other feet. Waveform analysis additionally revealed a compensatory knee flexion moment in SACH and a knee extension moment in Niagara and Jaipur during midstance. In mechanical stiffness testing, SACH had the highest stiffness, with Niagara and carbon fiber roughly similar, and Jaipur the most compliant with the greatest hysteresis. CONCLUSIONS: There may be an optimal stiffness range for future prosthesis designs that maximizes propulsive energy. This may be achieved by combining some characteristics of Jaipur and Niagara feet in new designs. Ultimately, optimizing stiffness and energetics for gait biomimicry while maintaining cost, availability, and versatility across cultures will alleviate the effects of limb loss among underserved populations.

RESUMO

Cardiomyocytes sense and shape their mechanical environment, contributing to its dynamics by their passive and active mechanical properties. While axial forces generated by contracting cardiomyocytes have been amply investigated, the corresponding radial mechanics remain poorly characterized. Our aim is to simultaneously monitor passive and active forces, both axially and radially, in cardiomyocytes freshly isolated from adult mouse ventricles. To do so, we combine a carbon fibre (CF) set-up with a custom-made atomic force microscope (AFM). CF allows us to apply stretch and to record passive and active forces in the axial direction. The AFM, modified for frontal access to fit in CF, is used to characterize radial cell mechanics. We show that stretch increases the radial elastic modulus of cardiomyocytes. We further find that during contraction, cardiomyocytes generate radial forces that are reduced, but not abolished, when cells are forced to contract near isometrically. Radial forces may contribute to ventricular wall thickening during contraction, together with the dynamic re-orientation of cells and sheetlets in the myocardium. This new approach for characterizing cell mechanics allows one to obtain a more detailed picture of the balance of axial and radial mechanics in cardiomyocytes at rest, during stretch, and during contraction. This article is part of the theme issue 'The cardiomyocyte: new revelations on the interplay between architecture and function in growth, health, and disease'.

RESUMO

The objective of this study is to investigate the properties of recycled carbon fiber (rCF) and its environmental impact, with a specific focus on the energy consumption of the recycling process based on the use of thermally activated oxide semiconductors (TASC). The mechanical and surface properties of rCF obtained under the optimal process parameters were characterized. The life cycle assessment method was used to evaluate the environmental impact of a closed-loop recycling process for carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) waste using TASC. The results indicated that the decomposition rate of resin was 95.5 %, and no carbonaceous solid was generated. The gaseous produced of the recycling process were mainly CO2 and H2O, and no liquid products were produced. The surface oxidation degree of rCF was relatively slight. COOH was generated on the surface of rCF, which was conducive to improving the interfacial adhesion viscosity with resin. The monofilament tensile strength of rCF was maintained above 97 %. Compared with landfill and incineration, CFRP waste recycling using TASC can make global warming potential, acidification potential and eutrophication potential reduced by 28 %, 32 %, and 25 %, respectively. Ozone layer depletion potential, human toxicity potential and terrestrial ecotoxicity potential in disposing CFRP waste using TASC were 30 %, 21 % and 41 % of that using pyrolysis, respectively. The energy consumption in carbon fiber recycling by TASC was only 23 % of that in virgin carbon fiber manufacturing. TASC is found to be a promising potential strategy for managing CFRP waste.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Dorsal instrumentation and decompression are the mainstays of spinal tumor treatment. Replacing titanium screws with carbon fiber-reinforced polyetheretherketone (CFRP) screws can reduce imaging artifacts on neural structures and perturbations of radiation dose. Further reduction of metal content in such screws might enhance the benefit. The aim of this study was to assess the artifacts produced by all-titanium screws (Ti-Ti), CFRP thread-titanium screw heads (C-Ti), and all-CFRP screws (C-C). METHODS: A cadaveric spine was used to place Ti-Ti, C-Ti, and C-C consecutively from T2 to S1. Computed tomography and 1.5T and 3T magnetic resonance imaging were performed for each screw system. Axial T1- and T2-weighted sequences of representative thoracic and lumbar regions were assessed for artifacts. The artifacts were classified as not relevant, considerable, or severe. RESULTS: We evaluated 92 screws and made 178 artifact assessments. The artifacts were clearly visible in computed tomography scans but did not influence the visualization of intraspinal structures. Severe magnetic resonance imaging artifacts were found in 28% (17/60, mostly in the thoracic spine) of Ti-Ti, 2% (1/60, all T1 sequences) of C-Ti, and 0% of C-C, and considerable artifacts were found in 47% (28/60) of Ti-Ti, 10% (6/60, only 1 T2 sequence) of C-Ti, and 0% of C-C screws (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: CFRP pedicle screws reduced the artifact intensity in spinal structures compared with titanium screws, and may be beneficial for planning radiotherapy and for follow-up imaging. C-C demonstrated an enhanced effect on dorsal structures.

RESUMO

Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which are porous inorganic-organic hybrid materials consisting of metal ions (clusters or secondary building units) and organic ligands through coordination bonds, have attracted wide attention because of their high surface area, huge ordered porosity, uniform structural cavities, and excellent thermal/chemical stability. In this work, durian shell biomass carbon fiber and Fe3O4 functionalized metal-organic framework composite material (durian shell fiber-Fe3O4-MOF, DFM) was synthesized and employed for the adsorption removal of methylene blue (MB) from wastewater. The morphology, structure, and chemical elements of the DFM material were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscope (XPS) techniques. Adsorption conditions such as pH, adsorption time, and temperature were optimized. The adsorption isotherm and kinetics results show that the adsorption process of DFM material to MB is more in line with the Freundlich model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Using these models, the maximum adsorption capacity of 53.31 mg/g was obtained by calculation. In addition, DFM material could be easily reused through an external magnet and the removal rate of MB was still 80% after five adsorption cycles. The obtained results show that DFM composite material, as an economical, environmentally friendly, recyclable new adsorbent, can simply and effectively remove MB from wastewater.

RESUMO

New Weibull-Pareto distribution is a significant and practical continuous lifetime distribution, which plays an important role in reliability engineering and analysis of some physical properties of chemical compounds such as polymers and carbon fibres. In this paper, we construct the predictive interval of unobserved units in the same sample (one sample prediction) and the future sample based on the current sample (two-sample prediction). The used samples are generated from new Weibull-Pareto distribution due to a progressive type-II censoring scheme. Bayesian and maximum likelihood approaches are implemented to the prediction problems. In the Bayesian approach, it is not easy to simplify the predictive posterior density function in a closed form, so we use the generated Markov chain Monte Carlo samples from the Metropolis-Hastings technique with Gibbs sampling. Moreover, the predictive interval of future upper-order statistics is reported. Finally, to demonstrate the proposed methodology, both simulated data and real-life data of carbon fibres examples are considered to show the applicabilities of the proposed methods.

RESUMO

When impact damage occurs in carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) structures, it is barely visible but may cause significant degradation in the mechanical properties of the structure. Hence, a structural health monitoring (SHM) system that can be installed in CFRP mobility structures and is sensitive to impact damage is needed. In this study, we attempted to establish an SHM system based on ultrasonic guided waves, which are generated by inputting a broadband chirp signal into a film-like piezoelectric actuator. The relationship between impact damage size and maximum time-of-flight (ToF) delay was investigated for three types of CFRP plates: woven, non-woven, and hybrid laminates. As a result, it was found that the maximum ToF delay increased linearly with an increase in the damage size for all CFRP laminates. Moreover, the amplitude of the A0 mode was found to be significantly affected by the damage length in the wave propagation direction. Thus, this SHM method using chirp ultrasonic waves can quantitatively evaluate the size and extent of the impact damage in CFRP laminates.

RESUMO

Polymers reinforced with virgin carbon fibers (VCF) are being used to make spar caps of wind turbine (WT) blades and polymers with glass fibers (GF) to make skins of the blade components. Here, we assess the life cycle environmental performance of the hybrid blades with spar caps based on VCF and the shells and shear webs based on RCF (recycled CF) composites (RCF-hybrid). The production of the WT blades and associated reinforced polymers is assumed to occur in Sweden, with their uses and end-of-life management in the European region. The functional unit is equivalent to three blades in an offshore WT with the market incumbent blades solely based on the GF composite or the hybrid option. The RCF-hybrid blades offer 12-89% better environmental performance in nine out of 10 impact categories and 6-26% better in six out of 10 impact categories. The RCF-hybrid blades exhibit optimum environmental performance when the VCF manufacturing facilities are equipped with pollution abatement systems including regenerative thermal oxidizers to reduce ammonia and hydrogen cyanide emissions; spar caps are made using VCF epoxy composites through pultrusion and resin infusion molding, and the blade scrap is mechanically recycled at the end of life. The energy and carbon payback times for the RCF-hybrid blades were found to be 5-13% lower than those of the market incumbents.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Compared to conventional racing shoes, Nike Vaporfly 4% running shoes reduce the metabolic cost of level treadmill running by 4%. The reduction is attributed to their lightweight, highly compliant, and resilient midsole foam and a midsole-embedded curved carbon-fiber plate. We investigated whether these shoes also could reduce the metabolic cost of moderate uphill (+3°) and downhill (-3°) grades. We tested the null hypothesis that, compared to conventional racing shoes, highly cushioned shoes with carbon-fiber plates would impart the same ∼4% metabolic power (W/kg) savings during uphill and downhill running as they do during level running. METHODS: After familiarization, 16 competitive male runners performed six 5-min trials (2 shoes × 3 grades) in 2 Nike marathon racing-shoe models (Streak 6 and Vaporfly 4%) on a level, uphill (+3°), and downhill (-3°) treadmill at 13 km/h (3.61 m/s). We measured submaximal oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide production during Minutes 4-5 and calculated metabolic power (W/kg) for each shoe model and grade combination. RESULTS: Compared to the conventional shoes (Streak 6), the metabolic power in the Vaporfly 4% shoes was 3.83% (level), 2.82% (uphill), and 2.70% (downhill) less (all p < 0.001). The percent of change in metabolic power for uphill running was less compared to level running (p = 0.04; effect size (ES) = 0.561) but was not statistically different between downhill and level running (p = 0.17; ES = 0.356). CONCLUSION: On a running course with uphill and downhill sections, the metabolic savings and hence performance enhancement provided by Vaporfly 4% shoes would likely be slightly less overall, compared to the savings on a perfectly level race course.

RESUMO

For the first time and by using an entire sample, we discussed the estimation of the unknown parameters θ 1, θ 2, and ß and the system of stress-strength reliability R=P(Y < X) for exponentiated inverted Weibull (EIW) distributions with an equivalent scale parameter supported eight methods. We will use maximum likelihood method, maximum product of spacing estimation (MPSE), minimum spacing absolute-log distance estimation (MSALDE), least square estimation (LSE), weighted least square estimation (WLSE), method of Cramér-von Mises estimation (CME), and Anderson-Darling estimation (ADE) when X and Y are two independent a scaled exponentiated inverted Weibull (EIW) distribution. Percentile bootstrap and bias-corrected percentile bootstrap confidence intervals are introduced. To pick the better method of estimation, we used the Monte Carlo simulation study for comparing the efficiency of the various estimators suggested using mean square error and interval length criterion. From cases of samples, we discovered that the results of the maximum product of spacing method are more competitive than those of the other methods. A two real-life data sets are represented demonstrating how the applicability of the methodologies proposed in real phenomena.

RESUMO

Following their successful utilization as novel bioanodes in Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs), Layered Double Hydroxide (LDH) were tested in the present investigation, as promising cathodes to reduce electrons coming from oxidation of organic matter in the anode compartment, in the presence of oxygen used as successful oxidant. Therefore, the LDH samples Ni3Al-LDH with the ionic ratio Ni2+/Al3+ equal to 3, were synthesized and added by adsorption to Carbon Felt (CF) fibres. They were then stored separately in three electrolyte solutions KCl, NiCl2 and AlCl3 used as catholytes in the MFCs. Effects of the active cationic sites located inside the Ni3Al-LDH on these electrolytes, were discussed in terms of energies produced by these MFCs. The structure and morphology of the synthesized LDH, were studied by using the analytical techniques XRD, FTIRS and SEM, while the electrode performances of the LDH-electrodes were investigated with the electrochemical methods CV and EIS. It was revealed that the CF modified with Ni3Al-LDH cathode and conditioned in the NiCl2 electrolyte solution yielded the highest energy harvesting for the MFC (i.e. 3.2 µW/cm2). This power density output was similar to previous clean one-compartment MFC. However, it was less expensive than an Enzymatic Fuel Cell (45 µW/cm2), making in evidence the highest cost of the material. Thus, by taking into account these encouraging findings, the low cost materials used in MFCs held great promise for practical application in electrochemical power devices and therefore fruit waste treatment. RESUMO

Damage assessment is a key element in structural health monitoring of various industrial applications to understand well and predict the response of the material. The big uncertainty in carbon fiber composite materials response is because of variability in the initiation and propagation of damage. Developing advanced tools to design with composite materials, methods for characterizing several damage modes during operation are required. While there is a significant amount of work on the analysis of acoustic emission (AE) from different composite materials and many loading cases, this research focuses on applying an unsupervised clustering method for separating AE data into several groups with distinct evolution. In this paper, we develop an adaptive sampling and unsupervised bivariate data clustering techniques to characterize the several damage initiations of a composite structure in different lay-ups. An adaptive sampling technique pre-processes the AE features and eliminates redundant AE data samples. The reduction of unnecessary AE data depends on the requirements of the proposed bivariate data clustering technique. The bivariate data clustering technique groups the AE data (dependent variable) with respect to the mechanical data (independent variable) to assess the damage of the composite structure. Tensile experiments on carbon fiber reinforced composite laminates (CFRP) in different orientations are carried out to collect mechanical and AE data and demonstrate the damage modes. Based on the mechanical stress-strain data, the results show the dominant damage regions in different lay-ups of specimens and the definition of the different states of damage. In addition, the states of the damage are observed using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) analysis. Based on the AE data, the results show that the strong linear correlation between AE and mechanical energy, and the classification of various modes of damage in all lay-ups of specimens forming clusters of AE energy with respect to the mechanical energy. Furthermore, the validation of the cluster-based characterization and improvement of the sensitivity of the damage modes classification are observed by the combined knowledge of AE and mechanical energy and time-frequency spectrum analysis.

RESUMO

In an attempt to improve their distance-running performance, many athletes race with carbon fiber plates embedded in their shoe soles. Accordingly, we sought to establish whether, and if so how, adding carbon fiber plates to shoes soles reduces athlete aerobic energy expenditure during running (improves running economy). We tested 15 athletes as they ran at 3.5 m/s in four footwear conditions that varied in shoe sole bending stiffness, modified by carbon fiber plates. For each condition, we quantified athlete aerobic energy expenditure and performed biomechanical analyses, which included the use of ultrasonography to examine soleus muscle dynamics in vivo. Overall, increased footwear bending stiffness lengthened ground contact time (p = 0.048), but did not affect ankle (p ≥ 0.060), knee (p ≥ 0.128), or hip (p ≥ 0.076) joint angles or moments. Additionally, increased footwear bending stiffness did not affect muscle activity (all seven measured leg muscles (p ≥ 0.146)), soleus active muscle volume (p = 0.538; d = 0.241), or aerobic power (p = 0.458; d = 0.04) during running. Hence, footwear bending stiffness does not appear to alter the volume of aerobic energy consuming muscle in the soleus, or any other leg muscle, during running. Therefore, adding carbon fiber plates to shoe soles slightly alters whole-body and calf muscle biomechanics but may not improve running economy.

RESUMO

Over the past two decades, optogenetic tools have been established as potent means to modulate cell-type specific activity in excitable tissues, including the heart. While Channelrhodopsin-2 (ChR2) is a common tool to depolarize the membrane potential in cardiomyocytes (CM), potentially eliciting action potentials (AP), an effective tool for reliable silencing of CM activity has been missing. It has been suggested to use anion channelrhodopsins (ACR) for optogenetic inhibition. Here, we describe a protocol to assess the effects of activating the natural ACR GtACR1 from Guillardia theta in cultured rabbit CM. Primary readouts are electrophysiological patch-clamp recordings and optical tracking of CM contractions, both performed while applying different patterns of light stimulation. The protocol includes CM isolation from rabbit heart, seeding and culturing of the cells for up to 4 days, transduction via adenovirus coding for the light-gated chloride channel, preparation of patch-clamp and carbon fiber setups, data collection and analysis. Using the patch-clamp technique in whole-cell configuration allows one to record light-activated currents (in voltage-clamp mode, V-clamp) and AP (current-clamp mode, I-clamp) in real time. In addition to patch-clamp experiments, we conduct contractility measurements for functional assessment of CM activity without disturbing the intracellular milieu. To do so, cells are mechanically preloaded using carbon fibers and contractions are recorded by tracking changes in sarcomere length and carbon fiber distance. Data analysis includes assessment of AP duration from I-clamp recordings, peak currents from V-clamp recordings and force calculation from carbon fiber measurements. The described protocol can be applied to the testing of biophysical effects of different optogenetic actuators on CM activity, a prerequisite for the development of a mechanistic understanding of optogenetic experiments in cardiac tissue and whole hearts.

RESUMO

Carbon fibre-reinforced polymers have been used in the sporting goods industry for decades, and wheelchairs have incorporated the material since the late 1980s. There is no independently collected data available on carbon fibre-reinforced polymer wheelchairs' performance on the ANSI/RESNA testing standards, however. This study evaluated three full carbon fibre wheelchair specimens to determine their performance versus similar wheelchairs. Testing determined that while the frames survived more testing cycles than any other wheelchair, the casters and rear tires failed similarly to other devices. Overall, due to the purchase cost, the cost benefit of the tested wheelchair model was similar to aluminium wheelchairs.Implications for rehabilitationCarbon fibre wheelchair construction is a viable alternative to aluminium, titanium, or steel construction, and decreasing costs will continue to improve the benefits of carbon fibre over these modelsCarbon fibre wheelchair found to be more durable than aluminium models, but are also much more expensive. The additional cost may be justified for some users that need the increased durability, howeverIncreased durability will reduce the number of repairs and warranty claims, potentially reducing the burden on a wheelchair user, and also improving their ability to travel and participate in their communityThe low weight of carbon fibre wheelchairs may increase the mobility of some users by allowing them to transfer more easily into and out of vehicles and manoeuvre throughout the environment.

RESUMO

Concern over the effects of nanomaterials on human health has risen due to the dramatic advances in the development of various technologies based on nanomaterials. Gifu Prefecture and Gifu University are developing technologies for recycling used carbon fiber because the waste disposal process is highly cost and energy intensive. However, generation of carbon fiber dust during the recycling process is a serious issue, especially in the occupational environment. Recycling requires carbonization by partial firing treatment at 500℃ followed by firing treatment at 440℃: these processes produce dust as a by-product. It is important to study the influence of carbon fibers on human health at a molecular level. In this study, three types of carbon fibers - before recycling, after carbonization, and after firing were evaluated for their toxic effects on mice. During the breeding period, no loss in body weight was confirmed. Further, by staining the lung tissue sections, it was found that pulmonary fibrosis did not occur. We found that these carbon fibers might not possess severe toxicity. However, we also found that the toxicity varies according to firing treatment. Furthermore, we found that firing treatment reduces the potential hazard to human health.
